Island Fashions

I’m about to go to college in the fall and major in communications at MSU, a largely accredited University. All my life I’ve wanted to be involed in fashion whether it be writing editorials or being a buyer. Will not majoring in some type of fashion merchadising/journalism/communications degree hinder my chances of getting a fashion orientated job? Or will I be A-OK with a great degree from a major university, not focused around fashion?

I’d like to know if there are colleges and/or classes in the US (preferably California) that revlolve around Japanese fashion. I don’t know much about it and I haven’t found very good things on Google. How about any books about the topic? I would like to travel to Japan in the future, so I am planning on learning more about it just by being there myself, but until that time I would like to find another resource. I know is very hard to get your talents noticed in this business since there is soo much competition out there. I know that there is an assistant as a second choice which is also good. I’m just wondering if I don’t make it as a top fashion designer or assistant is there another good job in this career run? If there is what would it be and what is the average pay for it?
